Network Share error Invalid Handle after KB4480970 patch

So three calls at 7:00am with clients that cant access their quickbooks and a client from the Department of Transportation explaining that all their water tables and plans are gone. After quick review we find that all network shares on the network are getting an error of Invalid Handle. Reboot both the fileserver and the workstation creates no improvement. HMMM not good. Wait it is Wednesday!!! That mean Microsoft tried to improve your computer again and most likely messed something up.

Sure enough there is a Jan 2019 roll up security update for Windows 7 call KB4480970 and this is affecting Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 Server computers. So how do you fix the problem. Cause lets face it, if you found this article it is because you want to fix it yourself. So here is the step by step. First go to your run command and type windows update. You should see the windows update screen and on the bottom left you should see a link to installed updated. Click on that link and you will get a list of all the updates that have been installed on the computer. Normally it is sorted by Date but if not go ahead and click on the date tab to ensure you have the newest update on top. Now look for update Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB4480970) . When you find it right click it and select uninstall. It will ask you to reboot to save all changes.

Congrats you are now working again, but you are not done. See now that you have uninstalled the update and rebooted your problem is no longer. But tomorrow the computer may just do that update again. So to solve the problem bring up the windows update dialog again and this time look in the center when they scan for update. See where there is listed there there is an important update. Click on the X important updates are available link and you get a list of updates the computer is waiting to install as soon as you are not looking. And LOOK!! you can see the 2019-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64 bases Systems (KB4480970) You don’t want that to install again so you right click it and select Hide Update. This will ensure it will not install again. Now you should check later on the internet to see if the patch has been repaired and install it later but for now, you have disabled it from being installed and avoiding each and everyday having to uninstall it and reboot your computer.

Now this is very important. If you do not feel comfortable with the above instructions then DON’T DO THEM. Instead hire a professional to assist you and take care of your computer.
