Twitter Reveals Most Discussed Topics of 2009

One of the coolest things about Twitter is that it has become a central nexus for discussion of the topics of the day. Anything and everything can be found on Twitter as long and someone is interested and talking about it. Twitter is quickly becoming the world's virtual water cooler, making it one of the most useful tools for finding out what the world is talking about. With the new list function you are able to find out what is being talked about anywhere and how often. Twitter's Trending Topics are useful because they highlight whether the online community are discussing Computer Repairs, Business Marketing, or Angelina Jolie at this very second.

Twitter decided to release a report of the top trending topics of 2009. It is a compilation of the most talked about subjects organized in the following categories: news events, people, movies, tv shows, technology, sports, and hashtags. While some of them you may expect like American Idol and Harry Potter others are a complete surprise as to the popularity of a subject to the masses. Of coarse this can be considered a skewed list since there are many automated systems that assist in promoting certain subjects through social networking sites and auto posting in Twitter but the list does hold merit. Below we are reprinting the list of topics for 2009.

News Events - #iranelection, Swine Flu, Gaza, Iran, Tehran, #swineflu, AIG, #uksnow, Earth Hour, and #inaug09

People - Michael Jackson, Susan Boyle, Adam Lambert, Kobe (Bryant), Chris Brown, Chuck Norris, Joe Wilson, Tiger Woods, Christian Bale, and A-Rod (Alex Rodriguez)

So the list speaks for itself and in theory speaks for what is on the minds of all the people on the internet that use the Twitter service for the year of 2009. But what does it mean. A new internet based company has started a website simply named Klout. Klout analyzes the content that people create on the Twitter service to better understand their influence of the topics they are talking about, in addition to the impact their post has on their audience. Using this system we can remove some of the activity that is performed by automated systems since they are not rewarded for messages that don't apply to the audience reviewing the post. They have a really long explaination of how they calcuate their listing of influence. Klout has released a list of the topics that have captured the attention of the most influential users and their communities on Twitter.
